Title: In Memory of Sigmund Freud Author: to be revealed (part of snapelyholidays) Pairing: Snape/McGonagall, Snape/Moody Rating: NC-17 Warnings: see original header Summary: Severus Snape spends his first summer holiday away from teaching cloistered at a remote house in strange company, not least his own.
Where to begin? This did make me think of the Summer in 1816 that Byron, Shelley, and Mary Shelley spent together, mostly because of the setting; there're no drugs in this story, but there are startling relationships and sex. Snape goes to spend his first summer after teaching at Minerva's Scottish home, unaware that Moody will be there. Of course, they clash violently, with an unexpected side-effect, as well as a tender coming together of the two heads of house. Surprising developments that seem to make perfect sense as both Moody and Snape seem to find their 'sea legs' after the first war. Minerva has a side to her that makes wonderful sense, one I believe is IC as well.
Don't let the het put you off; one thing I've appreciated about this fest has been the chance to dig in and expose myself to pairings I've never chanced before. I might go so far as to say that this is the fic I'll remember most from this year. I told the author in my review that the story reminded me of a little-known French author, Alain Fournier, and his sole literary work, 'Le Grand Meaulnes.' Wonderful word-crafting, prose that's both poetical and exact, so much so that it made me cry at the time. I've never even been tempted to read that book in the English, fearing those things would be lost, but here I found them all again in this HP story.
So many things resonated for me in this fic: Snape's floundering and insecurity, his depression and bitterness. His honesty. The drear setting of the elements battering the inhabitants of the house almost as much as Snape and Moody seemed determined to batter each other. Minerva as both the catalyst and steadying influence, the aching self-discovery and longings (past and present), the oddness of the relationships that force the reader to wonder over how they'll relate to each other in the future. Was this a single summer, never to be repeated, or will there be a next one? As the reader who was loathe to see it end, I only hope so.

| Book Rec: "American Studies" by Mark Merlis |
| Public |
| book rec |
|
A few months ago, synn sent me this book; I've read a bit of it here and there, then this week hit the point where I knew I had to finish it before I slept again.
I'm probably late to the party on this one, but I wanted to recommend it to anyone else who's never come across it before.
American Studies Author: Mark Merlis
Summary: Sixty-two-year-old Reeve--bitchy, horny, and wisecracking--lies in a hospital bed, the result of a brutal beating from a hustler. As if that weren't enough, his landlord is evicting him due to the noise he made during the attack, his career as a petty bureaucrat is at a dead end, and the silent, straight hunk in the hospital bed next to his is stirring longings Reeve vowed to never have again. Seeking both physical and emotional healing as he begins the slow process of recovery, Reeve rummages through the past. He recalls the troubled and closeted world of his former professor and mentor, Tom Slater, a famous American literary scholar who was driven to suicide during the McCarthy era. Reeve's vivid and gut-wrenching memories offer a sweeping view of fifty years of gay life in America-fifty years of American homophobia that he has survived, with bravery, grace, and humor.
I read this with a mixture of horror, admiration, longing and downright agony. And all of this was helped along by the writer's style, his sense of humor, his vague, unsettling fatalism. It's a story within a story, you see, and I'm not certain which one's most impactful, but after I was done reading this last night, I had to put on my coat and go out and sit on my deck and cry. Ain't much I read anymore that can do that.
Well worth the time and money, and if you google around, you can find used copies.

Title: Tartan Surprise Author: joanwilder aka RaeWhit Artist: veridian_dair Beta: jadzialove--thanks so much! Pairing: Harry/Severus Rating: NC-17 (both the fic and art) Warnings: None Word Count: 4075 Disclaimer: The Harry Potter universe is the property of J.K Rowling et al. Hamish Macbeth and his friends and village belong to M.C. Beaton and BBC Scotland. Summary: Harry and Severus 'dress' for the occasion…
A/N: This is my Christmas gift for veridian_dair, who, months ago, drew kilt!porn art for me when I was feeling low. Inspired, I promised a story centered on the art, because it's Severus in a kilt! It cried out for fic! The art itself has been placed within the story at the scene it depicts. Veridian, I wanted to do your art justice, and hope you like what I've created around it. Kilts are sexy anyway, but Severus + kilt = brain-melt!
This story is a short stand-alone sequel to Sex, Lies, and Audiobooks, and takes place in the fictional town of Lochdubh. Harry and Severus are now an established couple, and have returned to visit for a birthday party. Although set in the same universe as 'Sex, Lies, and Audiobooks,' the story will make sense for readers who've not read the parent fic.
veridian_dair also did 'Sex, Lies, and Audiobooks' art for me for Christmas. It's called What We Deserve, and illustrates one of my favorite scenes of the story, a recurring one.

Title: The World, The Flesh, The Devil Author: It's a mystery! Characters/Pairing: Severus/Lucius Rating: R Kinks/Themes Included: sensory deprivation, bondage Other Warnings: canon character death Word Count: 1500ish Summary/Description: The years spent in darkness have spiraled out, each one in a row like the ridges in a snail's shell, expanding as they go, and Severus has waited for this man. This is how he leaves.
This is an entry for Kinky Kristmas on daily_deviant, one of my favorite fics of the entire fest season thus far. Snape has spent years in a portrait, fully conscious, and is suddenly released by an old friend. This sort of reminded me of the scene in Kill Bill when Uma Thurman is nailed into that coffin and buried alive. I read this story with the same sense of horror, imagining what it must feel like to realize that you're trapped, but your mind goes on and on and on... I won't spoil the rest of it, what happens when Snape is finally free and realizes his captivity might've been shorter. What he chooses to do in the end, well, I think I can understand.
Beautifully written, and not very long (which is not to say I'm dissing longer fics (me of all people), but I say it to try and finalge those of you who don't have time to read anything longer to at least read this one. I've rec-ed valis2's The Pond before. Both of these fics have the same feel to them, and if you've not read 'The Pond', I really recommend it, especially if you like the one I've just rec-ed today.

This is my Christmas gift to my flist.
This year, I discovered a VHS tape of a children's short feature animated film, originally made in 1982. I was surprised to find that this was actually nominated for an Academy Award that year. It's based on Raymond Briggs' book The Snowman. The video is extremely well-done (by Diane Jackson), and Viola has become so entranced by it that she watches it at least once a day. You can buy the book, soundtrack, and DVD on amazon.
The only spoken words in the video occur in this children's song, 'Walking in the Air', which chronicles the little boy's flying adventure with The Snowman--what he feels and experiences as they soar across the sky. It's a beautiful and haunting melody, sung by the boy soprano Peter Auty. I've uploaded it so all of you can enjoy it, and download it if you like.

My best wishes to all of you for a happy and peaceful holiday season!

| HP fics for kids--I need some help. |
| Public |
|
Tonight was Viola's 3rd birthday party, and I will have a post about that in a day or two.
My 8 year old nephew showed up, toting a copy of GoF, which he is devouring. Yes, he has HP on the brain. I gave him a House scarf and a few pitures, then his mother and I talked about fanfiction (yes, they know I write it, and what I write), and I agreed to do some snooping around for something Gen (no ships or pairings) that might be suitable for a very precocious 8 year old. He reads a lot, but their internet access is strictly regulated, so there'd be no fears about him going anywhere other than the links I send his mother.
I think I saw a post about this in the summer. Are there archives for young readers? Does anyone have a 'list'? Are there LJ comms for younger readers where I could find fics? And I'm looking for well-written stuff, that goes without saying (although I just said it).
Or do you have a link to one particular story you think he might like? I'm going to read everything before I send his mother the links.
I sat and listened to him, watching his eyes, how excited he is, just glowing as he talked about what was happening in the book, and I thought, "It goes on."

Tis the fest season, and I've been reading all of snapelyholidays (which is also the only fest I wrote for this year), and most of snarry_holidays (one of my favorite Snarry fests), and picking up others here and there.
My gift was posted this past week--a bonus of fic and art.
Title: A Holiday With Old Friends Artist/Author: IT'S A MYSTERY! Pairing: Snape/Lupin There are no warnings to speak of, and you can read the summary in the header.
I really did ask for Snape/Lupin. One of the things I love about this fest is that Snape's always there, and that's the most important thing. It's interesting to read him in pairings I wouldn't usually tackle, and like the snarry_games, I'm finding the exposure to new things a pleasurable one. The ficlet before this art sets the stage. It's Christmas, and Snape can't bear to stay in Spinner's End, so he's alone in another place. Lupin seeks him out, and they have a history, it's clear. But what's so poignant is how shut in and brittle Snape is, while Lupin is almost pitifully in character here. He knows what would be the right thing to do, but it's others who make his choices for him. The art that accompanies the ficlet complements it so well. A great hooked nose, a glimpse of intimacy, then finally a pathetic cameo of what Snape would never show anyone. So far as fest gifts go, I'm thrilled with this one! For reals!
There's one fic I want to rec from snarry_holidays. Mostly because it's one that's stayed in my head; I even dreamed about it.
Title: In the Beginning Author: HAAAA Pairing: Snarry Rating: PG-15 Warnings: See the header, nothing noteworthy. Summary: Harry finds Snape de-aged after the war.
Ever see the movie 'Memento'? God, I hated that movie, mostly because the folding back in time, moving in reverse chronological order confused me. Time travel and deaging fics do that to me a bit, but this story (a deaged Snape) challenged me, but I kept my head on straight. The author does this clever thing with her story segments, terming them as the 'possible' beginning. Moving backwards in time for a while, you see how they started out, but then the present, starting with Snape's death, turns up a BIG surprise, and then the agonizing search for an answer, a way to re-educate, find something that was, but now appears lost. Hmmm, I just reread what I wrote, and I'm not sure I'm doing the fic justice. There's beautiful writing, raw honest and awkward emotion, and at the end, I scrolled right to the top and put it in my memories.

Title: Sex, Lies, and Audiobooks Author: RaeWhit ( aka joanwilder) Team: Snitch! Genre: Alive and Kicking (EWE) Prompts: Secrets and Lies, Coming Home Rating/Warnings/Kinks: NC-17, mild bondage, whipping Word Count: 48,000+ Summary: Belonging and deserving, needing and wanting—desires of the human heart that Severus and Harry must face when they're forced to the little village of Lochdubh to settle a very late codicil of Albus Dumbledore's will.
Author Notes: The village of Lochdubh and its inhabitants in this story are the property of BBC Scotland (from the series Hamish Macbeth). All things Harry Potter belong to J.K. Rowling et al. I'd be remiss if I didn't express my appreciation to Rudyard Kipling for his masterpiece, Captains Courageous.
This is my journal posting of my 2009 Mixed snarry_games fic. My heartfelt appreciation to jadzialove for the excellent beta reading, to whitecotton for help with Scottish-izing my Scottish, and to sestra_prior for her assistance with British questions.
This is posted in six parts; subsequent parts have been linked.
