Title: The First-born Child

Summary: Come, my friends, and listen to the tale of a flawed hero; the tale of Severus Snape who loves Lily Evans and is determined to have her. But when Lily passes beyond his reach, Severus manages to salvage something for himself: Lily will give him her child. Her first-born child, to be his own, his wife, and his love. Lily only has one child, and she comforts herself that her contract with Severus is void, for Lily's first-born is a son, and Severus had wanted a wife: a girl just like her mother. Severus thinks rather differently; Lily owes him. But in acquiring Harry Potter he discovers, belatedly, that love cannot be coerced or bought however desperate your need; that love is free, and the most valuable thing in the world.

This is a very long story, told from a unique POV, that of a wandering bard. It's an AR story where many canon elements remain intact (Snape's school experience, his love for Lily, his position as a wizard for the dark), but they're woven into a new universe of circumstances. Harry becomes Snape's property when he's sixteen; after that event, the remainder of the story is the development of their relationship. What leads up to that event, though, is an original and intriguing magical plot--of obsession, retreat from the world, and a contractual promise made in extremity.

I love the story-telling tone of this fic, the nights in the pub with the bard, with the townspeople gathered round to hear the tale of Snape, Lily and Harry. I spent an enjoyable evening caught up in this tale, but I couldn't help but wish I'd been able to hear it, sitting at the feet of the bard.
