Title: Birth (Written for [info]100quills)
Author: [info]joanwilder
Rating: G
Prompt Set: 50.3
Prompt: 8
Word Count: 200
Summary: A babe in arms...

Severus watched Harry, thinking to himself what a natural he was with a baby. Harry expertly swiveled the infant to his shoulder, at the same time managing to get the burp cloth there first.

"You're already an old hand at that," Severus remarked dryly.

Harry smiled happily. "Not that complicated. You're next."

"Thank you, no. You're so good at it, I'd pale in comparison." He paused, then reached over to take one of the tiny hands in between his fingers. He brushed it gently with his fingertips, marveling at the prefect proportions, the tiny joints and fingernails. "Birth is truly a miracle," he said softly, awe-struck when the little hand reflexively latched onto his finger.

"Look at what we're missing," Harry teased.

"Oh, not much at all. All these Weasleys will require godparents to take them on outings, weekends to spare their parents, not to mention presents on birthdays and Christmas. Birth at a distance is fine for me."

The baby screwed up the features of its tiny face, took a chest full of air, then let out a shriek at Harry's ear.

Patting her gingerly, Harry whispered, "Get Hermione, would you?"

Snape laughed out loud, then muttered, "Coward."

You're right--just like grandparenting--a lot of perks without many of the hassles.

Oooh, baby hands! *wibbles* There's nothing quite so amazing. Except perhaps for baby feet. Godparents are good, too, but I was not-so-secretly hoping for mpreg. ;D

Well, a girl must never lose hope. ;D One day, perhaps, you can be convinced to walk on the batshit!insane wild side and give it a try. seekritly begins hoarding money to purchase Cyn's services at the next auction and request mpreg. Mwhahahahahaha

I agree wholeheartedly.

Elton John. He is openly homosexual, has no children, and has many, many godchildren, including Victoria Beckham's children, I believe. Plus, Elton John is one of few openly gay men whom I can actually stand, so you have chosen an excellent comparison point to snarry (though snarry goes a bit farther than just tolerance^^).

Amazing, though! Reading mpreg, I can actually convince myself that it needs to happen. Then reading this, I realize that it's not children or lack thereof that make snarry - Snape and Harry make snarry possible all on their own! :3

I think men are men, and as such can be role models for children, regardless of their sexual orientation.

Not much of an mpreg fan--I've written two that only skirted the issue, really, and only because my recipients in those fests required them. And I've no problem with Snape and Harry wanting children; but like Muggle same sex couples, I prefer to see them use the 'usual' ways to end up with them.

So glad you liked it!

Psst. They are wizards: there is more than one way to skin a cat (or make a baby, so to say^^); not all roads lead to mpreg - we're not in the Roman Empire. :)

I was lucky with the first mpreg I read - by Lexin and Tidmag, which I liked, so mpreg is okay. My squick is: Snarry MPREG only. I don't like non-snarry harry or snape mpreg. See: There's just something missing in those fics. I think you know of what I speak. :)

What about a spell to turn a man into a woman? And after 12 months or so (9+3 months of breastfeeding, better for baby^^), a counterspell back into a man. Isn't magic wonderful? :)

Hmmm, I'll take a pass on that one. :) Although I sometimes write children into my stories, I'm loath to do this as a plot device that isn't natural. Like to use magic for all sorts of stuff, but 'altering' gender or anatomy for the purpose of childbearing is sort of squicky to me.

Darn it. ;) And all this time, reading CoS, I actually thought it was cool how there was a potion to turn a person into any other person! And why not into a person of the opposite gender? And for that matter, why not just into the opposite gender? But that's just me. I think Potions Master Severus Snape can brew anything. (even a potion to make Harry's hair lie flat^^)

Well, that's not really what we've been talking about. I love using Polyjuice Potion in a story; what I've said is that I won't use magic for the purpose of allowing males to procreate. I have nothing against genderbending potions or stories, but personally, for the purposes of making children, it's just not my thing.
