Yes, and I didn't just google it now.

OH NOES, she's figured out how to do a poll.

Yes, I'm reading 'Cloistered' and expect to see this word.

erm, I'd probably try to figure it out from context.

Also, I think there should have been a "YAYS she's figred out how to do a poll!"

I like polls.

Yes, you would be able to figure out that it's a hat from context, but not the unique sort that this one is. I've emailed Sioban, and asked if maybe I shouldn't just describe it a bit more than she has in the text.

Yays! You liked my poll? I like them unless they're used to ask me things like 'should I dye my hair or not?'. How the hell should I know, and besides, I can't even decide 'with or without pepperoni'.

um.. *deletes that 'should I dye my hair or not' poll*

oh, with pepperoni! Definitely. unless you're a pescatarian like me.

Of course I liked your poll! and I suspect you can be trusted to use this power only for good, so it's all okay : )

Alright. I give in. Is the second comment too early to start making 'poll'-slut jokes?

i think it's a word a particular audience will know, and you happen to get lots of costume geeks in fandom.
but a couple of good context clues can make it clear without whacking anybody over the head. so to speak.

my mommy made me a hennin from tagboard and tinsel when I was a tiny tot. yay mom! ;)

You're right, I didn't think about that--fandom folks being into costuming. The context will show it's a headpiece, but not much more. Thanks!

Will I be the only person to openly admit I checked "Hell, no..."

I don't even know what a "pescatarian" is.

(is feeling pathetically "not in the clique" at the moment)

I love polls, even when I don't know the answer. :)

Hey, I was the first 'Hell no.'. I spent I'm not going to tell you how long trying to figure out what 'hénin' was in French. Then when I discovered that it'd been misspelled and was hennin, and so was the English, I was still clueless. I knew it was some sort of hat from the context, but didn't know it was that pointy one like Sleeping Beauty wears--you'll see hennins at Disneyland very soon!

*wonders how I'd look in a henin...I could get one at any number of gift shops at Disneyland*

The answer: ridiculous. But no more so than the Jack Sparrow mouse ears I wore around Walt Disney World on my last visit so I could match my son. :-)

WTF, I just looked it up in the TLFi, and you're right, it's supposed to be hennin in French. I've never seen it spelled any other way than "hénin", though. Weird.

I'm torn between a "female-donkey" (or do I mean "jenny"/"jennin"?) & a female Medieval/early Renaissance wimple head-dress thing. Or is that a "coif"? Short answer - I don't know!

You got it, it's the latter!

Oops, I was thinking of "hinny" with the donkey reference. (I looked it up) - a hinny is a cross between a female donkey & a stallion - an ass is a mare & a male donkey. Not that you wanted to know that.
But you know, I'm glad that you posted the question - because up until then I though "Cloistered" was being translated INTO French - so I didn't bother to read it! *headdesk*
It's on my reading list now - something to look forward to!

HAAA, oh my, I wonder how many others think that? I promise, it's good ol' down-home English, with a hint of medieval word styling.

I'd imagine I was the only one foolish enough to get it muddled. *rolls eyes at self*
I'm impressed with your ability in another language. A translation task of this size & complexity must be difficult.

Actually, it's almost an...orgasmic experience for me... :). I love translating, and there isn't much that stops me dead in my tracks. Some of the best Snarry I've ever read was in French, and that's when I translated all of Lychee's stuff. I still have more after this one. But first I'll have to get some writing of my own done.

It's a lovely word. I didn't know it, but as a translator, I have Babylon on my PC, so I just have to click on the word to have the translation. (Ha, no, they don't pay me to promote the software ;-)

yeah, once I knew it was 'hennin', I was fine. It was 'hénin' that was the problem.

I didn't know, then I read the fifth option, and I had an illumination :D Cloister -> Middle Ages -> hennin = hénin, right?

[info]joanwilder

Well, that was my original problem, because I couldn't find hénin anywhere. But then I considered that it might be misspelled, and that's when I found it's actually 'hennin' in both French and English. See, I knew it was in the Middle Ages, but that still didn't help me. Geez.
